Disclaimers and other legal stuff
The usual disclaimers, qualifications and warnings apply.
Additional qualifying notices include, but are not limited to:
- Images Images
are optimized for online display. Images are not to size, not to
scale. They are reproduced from scans from a number of sources,
done through a variety of technologies and processes, and at varying
resolutions. In some cases where smaller than expected images are
presented, it is because attempts to increase the size to conform more
closely with other images on the website resulted in loss of image
quality. Most images are jpg or jpeg files, but a few are png or bmp or
gif or other file types. As of January 2020, our web site displayed and described over 8200 images of plate number singles, from 1851 to the latest issues.
- Copyrights Images
of U.S. stamps issued since Jan. 1, 1978 are copyrighted by the U.S. Postal
Service. Stamp images may be reproduced in color if they are less
than 75% or greater than 150% of their original size. This is impossible to predice, as everyone has different browsers and screen sizes. Stamp images
may be reproduced in any size if they are used in the promotion of the
hobby of philately.
- Trademarks Some
names, images or logos are trademarks, service marks or registered trademarks of various
organizations or companies. The legal symbols "(R)" or "(TM)"
or "(SM)" have
been included when feasible, if the image or logo provided to us
included same. All such trademarks are the property of their
respective owners. Rectification of errors in this respect can be
made upon request to the Webmaster.
- Content Copyright
is claimed for all copyright-protected and protectable expression within
this website, for the work of the author. Of course, all World
Wide Web browsers request and receive an electronic "copy" of each web
page, including text and images, in order to display the information. That doesn't count.
- Ownership attribution
Many of the stamp images are of common stamps, others are not. We are happy
to acknowledge the owners of unique, unusual or specific stamps when
this information is known and if the owner so desires ("Image courtesy
of..." or "From the collection of...", for example). Attribution
requests can be made to the Webmaster.
- Opinions
Opinions are those of the respective authors and not necessarily of APNSS,
its officers or members.
- Links
We provide occasional links to web sites of other philatelic
organizations, clubs, societies, individuals, and businesses, when the
topic is felt to be of interest or useful to APNSS members or other visitors to our web site. The links are tested when they are created, and worked
at the time. However, other sites' policies, web hosts,
communications, security, technical practices and prowess are beyond the
control of APNSS. If a link stops working, please notify the
Webmaster and we will attempt to rectify it on our own or in
communication with the webmaster of the linked site. However, we
cannot guarantee that all links will work or all linked sites will be
accessible and/or fully functional at all times. Links may be
added, modified or removed without notice.
- Privacy APNSS does
not harvest, track or share visitors' personally identifiable data such
as user names or email addresses. Personally identifiable data may
be voluntarily disclosed by visitors who communicate with us through
emails, comments, a guestbook or similar communications. Aggregate information (such as
a "number of hits" counter) is collected to determine web site usage
and similar statistics. Aggregate information is collected by a
third party and is not traceable to individual users.
- Cookies APNSS does
not use cookies, to our knowledge.
- Technical stuff
APNSS web pages were originally created using Microsoft FrontPage V10
(2002).
Around 2012, Microsoft stopped supporting FrontPage and it was no longer possible to
upload pages with new images.
Starting in 2013, new text pages have been created using Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 Version 12. All new pages were done in Dreamweaver, and the conversion process for old pages was essentially completed by late 2019.
The vast majority of stamp images are .jpg and .jpeg files, with a very
few .png, .gif, .bmp and other file types.
From 2003 to 2012, web pages and image files were uploaded through WS_FTP Pro.
Since 2013, web pages have been uploaded using Filezilla.
Web hosting is arranged through Webkeepers and successor companies. Technical info
(accurate as of June 2016):
- CPU: Pentium III / 1000MHz dual processor
- Memory: 1024 MB
- Hard disk: 72 GB (RAID1:Mirror)
- OS: FreeBSD 4.3-RELEASE
- HTTP server: Apache 1.3.34 (suEXEC enabled)
- FTP server: ProFTPD 1.2.9
- Mail server: Sendmail 8.11.7p1
- POP server: Qpopper 3.1.2.
- Data base server: PostgreSQL 7.1.2
- Perl: 5.00503
- Browser support The
site works best on IE5+, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Foxfire, with Javascript enabled.
Images with .bmp or .gif extensions occasionally do not display,
especially in IE. We usually attempt to rename and republish such
images as .jpg or .jpeg files, as this seems to resolve the problem. If
you encounter problems, please contact the Webmaster at apnss.sec at gmail dot com (intentionally not linked to reduce spam).
- Comments APNSS
welcomes comments and suggestions. Email the Webmaster at
secretary
at apnss.sec at gmail dot com or contact any
Society officer through the Membership web
page.
