The National Banknote issues

The National Bank Note Company originated these designs, and printed stamps under contract from the USPOD from 1870 to 1873.

The plate numbers were not unique. Typically, plate number 1 was assigned to one value in each series, plate 2 to another value, and so on. When they printed a new series of stamps, plate number 1 was assigned again.

Plate number material from all three companies is rare, but this is especially true of the National printings. The company held the contract for only a brief period (at least for the printing of this series), and did not retain a vast archive of their work the way American did. Most National plate number examples are photographically cropped from larger blocks of proofs and essays.
