Spotlight on the 2002-2005 Sea Coast Nonprofit Organization coil issues

The various Sea Coast issues have been assigned non-sequential Scott numbers and may be hard to track down.  Here's all the summary data in one place.

Water-activated coils

Scott 3775, (5) water-activated coil with blue 2003 date

  • Plate number B111 every 10 stamps (rolls of 500)
  • Plate number B111 every 10 stamps (rolls of 10,000)
  • Both printed by Banknote Corporation of America (BCA)

Scott 3864, (5) water-activated coil with black 2004 date

  • Plate number S1111 every 25 stamps (rolls of 3,000)
  • Plate number S1111 every 14 stamps (rolls of 10,000)
  • Printed by Sennett Security Products (SSP)

Large-hole and small-hole varieties have been reported on the 2004 water-activated coil.  They are caused by wear of the cone-shaped perforating pins and are not an intentional or collectible variety.

Scott 4348, (5) water-activated coil with black 2007 date

  • Plate number S11111 every 31 stamps (rolls of 500)
  • Perforated 9.8 vertically
  • Issued in 2008 but with 2007 date
  • Lithographed, with microprinting
  • Printed by Sennett Security Products (SSP)

Scott 3693, (5) self-adhesive coil with blue 2002 date, tagged (prephosphored)

  • Plate number B111 every 21 stamps (rolls of 10,000)
  • Printed by BCA

Scott 3874, (5) self-adhesive coil with larger (2.1 - 2.2 mm), bolder and taller black 2003 date (issued in 2004), untagged, serpentine die cut 10 vertically

  • Plate number P2222 every 27 stamps (rolls of 10,000), issued in Sept. 2004
  • Printed by Ashton-Potter USA

Scott 3874 var, (5) self-adhesive coil with larger black 2003 date (issued in 2004), untagged, die cut 10 vertically, die cuts about 0.50 mm deep

  • Plate number P2222 every 27 stamps (rolls of 10,000)
  • Printed by Ashton-Potter USA

Scott 3874 var, (5) self-adhesive coil with larger black 2003 date (issued in 2004), untagged, die cut 10 vertically, "Black Ghost" variety.  The P and final 2 of plate number P2222 have a shadow of each character just to the left of the darker black character.

Scott 3874 var, (5) self-adhesive coil with larger black 2003 date (issued in 2004), untagged, die cut 10 vertically, "Yellow Shift Black Ghost" variety.  The yellow color is shifted so far to that right that the yellow digit (the third 2 of plate number P2222) appears to be printed under the fourth black 2.  In addition, a narrow yellow band appears in the upper right margin of the design.

Scott 3874 var, (5) self-adhesive coil, untagged, die cut 10 vertically with the "deep valley" serpentine die cut of Scott 3974a (approx. 0.75 mm), but the larger black 2003 date of Scott 3874.  A single roll of 10,000 was reported in April 2006 with plate number P2222.

Scott 3874a, (5) self-adhesive coil with smaller (1.7+ mm), narrower and shorter black 2003 date (issued in 2005), untagged, serpentine die cut 10 vertically "deep valley" variety, die cuts 0.75 - 0.90 mm deep

The stamp is produced on coiled backing strips but is die-cut on all four sides to look like a sheet stamp.

  • Plate number P1111 every 22 stamps (rolls of 10,000, issued in 2003), dark black date
  • Plate number P2222 every 22 stamps (rolls of 3,000, issued in 2004) dark black date

  • Plate number P2222 every 27 stamps (rolls of 3,000 and 10,000, issued in 2004), light black date
  • Printed by Ashton-Potter USA
  • Originally Scott considered these differences insufficient to justify a separate catalog number, but reversed itself and assigned 3785a in January 2005, renumbering the original 3785a to 3785b

Scott 3785b, (5) self-adhesive "coil" with black 2003 date, printed on prephosphored paper, die cut 9.35 x 10.1

  • Plate number P2222 every 27 stamps (rolls of 3,000 and 10,000, issued in 2004), light black date

Scott 3785 var, (5) self-adhesive "coil" with black 2003 date misprinted far to the right, untagged, die cut 9.45 x 10.1 (9-1/2 x 10)
