U.S. Possessions

This section illustrates plate number material for Canal Zone issues that are not overprints of regular U.S. stamps.

Canal Zone (1904-1938, 1939-1978)

Stamps of the Canal Zone superseded the overprinted U.S. issues in 1938. Stamps of Panama were used during the 1979-1999 transition period. In 1999, ownership of the Canal Zone and operation of the canal reverted to Panama.

Early issues

CZ Scott 39d, "Canal Zone" reading down, foreign order number 4068

Since there were no plate numbers on these stamps of Panama, the foreign order number is sometimes collected as the next best option. Foreign order numbers are often erroneously referred to as a "plate number."

CZ Scott 43, foreign order number 4244

CZ Scott 44, foreign order number 4248

CZ Scott 45, foreign order number 4243

CZ Scott 46, foreign order number 8848

These overprints were created when a 1920 order for 1¢ stamps from ABNCo in New York was delayed. When the Canal Zone post offices ran out, they purchased 200,000 1¢ stamps from Panama and had them overprinted. They were used from early March to mid April, 1921, when the stamps ordered from New York finally arrived. --from David Zemer, Canal Zone Philatelist, First Quarter 2021.

Official issues

Canal Zone did not print special stamps for official use. However, regular issues with a "P" perfin (perforated initial) indicate stamps sold to and used by the Panama Canal Company, the administator of the canal. These are essentially the same thing: forerunners of official stamps.

Airmail Official issues

The Gaillard Cut airmail stamps were overprinted for use as airmail official stamps. However, all selvage was removed from the panes as part of the overprinting process, thus no plate number varieties exist.

First series, March 31, 1941: Type I overprint (19-20mm) on the 5¢, 10¢, 15¢, 20¢, 40¢ and $1 values, Scott CO1-CO4, CO6-CO7

Second series, September 22, 1941: Type II overprint (17mm) on the 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 30¢ and 40¢ values, Scott CO8-CO12

Additional printing, June 4, 1942: Type I overprint on the 30¢ value, CO5

Additional denomination, November 1947: Type I overprint on the 6¢ value, Scott CO14

Before the need for an entire series was recognized, some airmail issues were processed with a "P" perfin (perforated initial) to indicate stamps sold to and used by the Panama Canal Company, the administator of the canal. These are essentially the same thing: forerunners of airmail official stamps.

Canal Zone Revenue issues

Special revenue stamps were prepared for Liquor Tax, Cigarette/Tobacco Tax, and Customs Baggage Inspection uses in the Canal Zone. The liquor tax stamps are in a format that likely included plate numbers, whereas the other types probably did not. Please report any plate number examples.
